The 20 yard container in Dallas
When somebody calls and is not sure, the 20 yard is where we usually end up. It handles the jobs most Dallas homes and small job sites produce — a multi-room renovation, an estate cleanout, a roof after a spring hailstorm — without being so tall that loading becomes a chore.
It is 22 feet long, which is the thing to check: that is most of a two-car driveway in Lake Highlands or Preston Hollow, and the truck needs a straight run to set it down. Where it fits, it fits everything else about the job.
Renovations, roofs, estate cleanouts
A full kitchen and bath together, a three-bedroom flooring job plus the cabinets, a whole house being cleared before a sale — these are 20 yard jobs. Roofers like it for tear-offs up to roughly 30 squares of asphalt shingle; past that, or on a double layer, the 30 yard's higher weight allowance is the safer pick.
It is also the standard container on smaller DFW construction sites during framing and drywall, when the waste is bulky rather than heavy, and for landscaping crews clearing a lot of brush, fence panels and storm damage.
What the 20 yard includes
Delivery, pickup, disposal up to the included three tons and a standard 7-day rental, all in one flat price. If you are loading roofing or tile and think you will go over, say so when you book — we would rather plan a second haul than surprise you.
Suitability
Is the 20 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 20 yard for
- Multi-room or whole-house renovation
- Roof tear-offs up to about 30 squares
- Estate, foreclosure and rental turnover cleanouts
- Framing and drywall waste on a build
- Big landscaping and storm cleanups
Pick a different size for
- All-concrete or all-dirt loads (use a 10 loaded level)
- New construction or demolition of a whole house — that is a 30 or 40
- Driveways under about 35 feet with no other spot
- Asbestos, paint, propane, tires, batteries
Placing a 20 yard container on a DFW property
It needs about 35 feet of clear, level driveway (22 feet of container plus the truck), and overhead clearance for the lift. On your own driveway or lot in Dallas we found no City rule requiring a permit; in a street or alley the City treats it as occupying the right-of-way and Public Works Right-of-Way Management (214-948-4290) issues the permits. Other cities have their own rules — several bar containers from the right-of-way outright, and many reserve roll-offs to their contracted hauler. Boards go under the rails as standard. The city-by-city guide covers every city.

20 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
How many pickup loads is a 20 yard dumpster?
About six. Think of it as a whole house's worth of furniture and junk, or a kitchen plus a bathroom plus the flooring.
Can a 20 yard fit in a Dallas driveway?
Usually. It is about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide, so a standard two-car driveway has room, and it needs roughly 35 feet of straight clearance for the truck. We found no City of Dallas rule requiring a permit on private property.
What is the weight limit on a 20 yard?
Three tons included. Shingles, tile and plaster are the loads that test it; household junk and renovation debris do not.
How long is the rental?
7 days as standard, with daily extensions if the job runs on. Call or text before the pickup date.
Can I get a 20 yard the same day?
Call before noon and in Dallas and the southern suburbs we can often have it on your driveway that afternoon. The far north and east of the metroplex is usually next morning.
